We do not sell our babies for peanuts...

We don't breed with run of the mill stock

our stock was sourced

from PROFESSIONAL BREEDERS at the time we purchased our breeding herd.

We can produce most of the colours,  markings etc available in the EXOTIC PYGMY HEDGEHOG

we do not have or breed hedgies by the dozen

Please don't rush out and purchase a hedgehog because it is a cheap pet to own. IF you do right by the hedgehog it is not cheap to own.  If you want to own this type of pet it is essential it has the right conditions to be kept in with the right exercise wheel etc. Kitting out a hedgehog from the getgo is not cheap and no one should purchase a pet because it is cheap to begin with.

Be a responsible pet owner.

We do not supply hedgies to SPUR OF THE MOMENT BUYERS...

We take bookings on hoglets once we see colour developing and the various face colouring, markings etc. However the hoglets colouring and facial markings will change over the weeks.

We ensure our babies are strong and healthy before we part with them, able to face the big wide world out there.

They are also guaranteed to be tame, healthy and a quality pet

AT HEDGEHOG HEAVEN WE PROMOTE RESPONSIBILE PET OWNERSHIP

OF THESE OVER THE TOP ADORABLE EXOTIC PETS.

We RARELY have the run of the mill type hedgehog but some rather EXOTIC COLOURS,

MUTATIONS ETC  OF THESE EXOTIC PETS

BE DARING, GO FOR THE ULTRA EXOTIC.

FIRST AND FOREMOST A HEDGIE IS NOT A CHEAP PET,

THE ONLY TIME IT WILL BE A CHEAP PET,  IS WHEN ITS NEEDS ARE NOT CATERED TO.

Housing is vitally important, as is an exercise wheel,

it is not fair of anyone to keep a hedgehog in a very small cage, not supply it with a wheel for exercise and FEED the cheapest food possible.

We will only supply our hedgehogs to responsible future owners, who have researched this exotic type of pet,

we will not sell to any youngster and please if you are a youngster

your parents are the one's that need to make contact with me.

CAPE AND CAPE PROVINCES - UNFORTUNATELY WE CANNOT ASSIST YOU WITH A HEDGIE -YOU REQUIRE A PERMIT - WE BELIEVE NO PERMITS ARE ISSUED FOR THIS TYPE OF PET IN THESE REGIONS

THEREFORE WE CANNOT ASSIST YOU

Keeping healthy and happy hedgehogs

Professional breeders protect their animals, therefore we do not allow any public into our hedgehog room, they have a tremendous sense of smell so STRANGERS visitors,  sorry, too much of a risk for our mothers with new borns and young.

We are however always  available to help you with any questions you may need answering.

Follow good housekeeping, such as hygienic conditions being top of the list at all times. Clean water, clean food bowls, an occasional treat BUT not required only if desired by the owner. A top quality cat kibble is fed to all our hedgehogs. We don’t feed cheap food.

PAWS FOR THOUGHT....

Before you rush out and buy a hedgehog on impulse research on the internet.  This is an indoor pet, it is a pet that needs a wheel to exercise. IT IS OUT AT NIGHT.  So research and if you cannot give a hedgehog the basics,  don't be tempted to buy it.

I get a good few people asking me to take on their UNWANTED pets, they have no suitable cage, NO exercise wheel, some are kept outdoors, some in carboard boxes.  ????  The AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG was initially imported into SA it is not meant to be kept outdoors.

Some of these owners were never educated, informed what is necessary to keep the hedgehog in good health, they buy the animal clearly from someone who would be referred to as a backyard breeder, if they were breeding anything other as in canine's or feline's. they are not remotely interested in ensuring the hedgehogs they sell end up in the right homes, the people purchasing them are NOT informed, TOLD WHAT IS RIGHT AND WHAT IS NOT,  the seller simply could not care.  Please realise that this may seem a cheap pet, but once you have bought a well bred quality hedgehog and you have purchased the necessary to house it correctly and properly and feed it a quality diet not the cheapest diet you can find, it ends up a tad expensive.

Do your homework if you are prepared to purchase what it takes to ensure you have a hedgehog that will have everything it requires you are more than welcome to contact us with regards to your healthy, happy,  tame hedgehog baby.

We will not sell any hedgehog to anyone who once they have it will go out and purchase the necessary.  I would think one would purchase the necessary and then by the animal.

Hedgehogs just like everything else have feelings, respond to kindness,  need to be kept in hygienic conditions, taken out regularly, played with, exercised. Fed a quality food.  A hedgehog is a FOREVER pet not something you buy get tired of and dump on someone else. Find out before you purchase this pet if it is going to be suited to you and your lifestyle. Please be a responsible owner.  Please do not buy on impulse.  Thanks for your time.

research on the internet if this type of exotic pet is suited to you and your lifestyle.  CAPE AND CAPE PR0VINCES ENQUIRE ABOUT OBTAINING A PERMIT BEFORE REQUESTING TO BUY A HOGLET.

NO PERMIT - NO HEDGEHOG....   Please be advised permits are not obtainable at this time.

WE SELL QUALITY, HEALTHY HEDGIES

We use wooden housing for all our own hedgies, NOT RABBIT CAGES. However nothing wrong with using rabbit cages just ensure they are spacious, as some are very small to keep a hedgie housed in. the length should be at least 90cm if not a meter.

Our own cages are specifically made to our own requirements not purchased in any pet store. As a result of being built to our specification, they are not cheap.  We can however place an order for you with our supplier.

You can however purchase a suitable rabbit cage from any petshop.  NOT AN OUTSIDE HUTCH, these are indoor animals and exercise is very important, they must have a wheel or you are going to end up with a tubby hedgie.

OUR BABIES LEAVE US WITH A CARE SHEET - tame, sample of food etc.

Info on the newborn hedgie baby, known as a HOGLET....

Born deaf, blind, pink in colour, the spikes will start to appear a matter of a couple of hours after birth and continue to do so. HOWEVER we do not handle new borns, we do not handle babies of a week or even two weeks, so we do not know the sex of any of them and in the majority of cases we will not know the colouring either. We may get an indication, if one is going to colour up darker than another for example,  but the colour will only become obvious once the hoglet is a few weeks of age.

Various colours are available periodically from salt and pepper, to grey to apricot to cinnacot, so it goes on.

We have recently bred our first PANDA looking hedgie.  Both eyes have patches of black around them.

So you want to buy an AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG…

What do you need to know about owning this very sweet loving little pet???

I am amazed at what the public are told by some breeders and I presume it is more about getting the sale, than informing the future owners of what needs to be done etc.

To own one of these delightful little pets is very rewarding, but it should be just as rewarding for the hedgie,  to be owned by an informed owner.

In recent times, last week in fact, one Lady  contacted me and she had been sold three males, told they would be just fine as they were all brothers.  They are now mature males and attacking each other.  So it is now not a case of having them live in one large cage it is a case of getting another two cages. Fortunately the person concerned can well afford to go out and buy another two cages, equip them as necessary but be cautious know the facts about the AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG…

Some folk don’t have the means to kit out another two cages for two hedgies hence they often resort to rehoming, had they been informed at the start they would never have bought three hedgehogs, in the first place. BUT ONE.

They are solitary animals.  Meaning they live on their own and the only time they should be put with another hedgehog is when you want them to breed. OTHERWISE on their own.

Some people think this is so sad but this is what they are, they live a solitary life be it in captivity or the indigeous types that are out in the wild. AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOGS ARE LEGAL TO OWN.

Babies leave the nest and go onto live their own life. Some people are advised you can keep two of the same sex together, litter mates, BUT beware. If you do this often you will find two babies that started off  being the same size in the nest, in time, one will become  smaller than the other, irrespective of how many bowls of food are in that cage.  SO ideally keep them on their own from the start.

There will come a time once the hedgies living together, will fight irrespective if they are sisters or brothers. DON’T GO THIS ROUTE – do it right from day one and if you cannot afford to buy all the necessary for the hedgie living on its own, own housing, own wheel, own everything don’t buy more, if you cannot afford to do right by them.

The public are clearly not informed when buying hedgies as I had a Lady the other day phone me up to say she had bought two hedgies, and she found babies in the cage?????  So whoever she purchased her hedgies from, did not tell her to keep them separate.

It may sound wonderful that they have babies BUT, if the female is not mature and not big enough, as no female under the weight of 300gms should ever be allowed to reproduce, it could cause her issues, affect her own health, her own development. So the last thing anyone should be wanting is babies from very young animals.

If left with the male,  very good chance in time he is going to kill those babies. Another nightmare.

A good while back a Lady contacted me asking if I could assist her rehoming her two hedgies, I did not know the person at all, but her reason for wanting rid of them, could not handle seeing the babies killed one after the other, barbaric.  Well clearly another person,  never informed as to what should be done, what can happen etc.

So again be cautious where you buy from, that you are indeed informed as to all the ins and outs and if your breeder of choice,  is only concerned about the sale of the hedgie, time to move on and find a breeder that will give you all the information you will ever need.

The hedgies we sell will settle with their owners, in no time at all. We have had hedgies leave us, curled up in the new owner’s neck. It tells a story.

I also hear how people buy these little darlings at very young ages and they can never tame them???  They have never been advised by the breeder how to go about handling them at all. Again go with a breeder who informs you, will walk that road with you.

I as a breeder of these delightful spikey pets am proud to hear and get photos of my hedgies that I have sold to good homes, people that took the trouble to research all about them before jumping into buying one.

All pets when bought should be UNTIL DEATH DO US PART and this is no exception with an AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG.

Don’t breed them unless you as a future breeder are prepared to inform your buyers of all the ins and outs to owning them.  Don’t breed them unless you are assured that the future owners are the right owners. Dont breed them if you are not prepared to go the extra mile and finding them the right homes.

The AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG IS LEGAL TO OWN some parts of SA you require a permit to own them, apply and get one.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT OWNING THE EXOTIC ANIMAL

THE AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG

Before ANYONE rushes out, orders or purchases this type of pet DO YOUR HOMEWORK. It is somewhat alarming to me that people who have been sold these animals before by BREEDERS are in fact totally clueless about them???

The OWNERS - Very surprised to hear they should be kept on their own, as they are SOLITARY animals, very surprised to find babies in a cage OUT OF THE BLUE when they had two of either sex in the same cage.

Very surprised to find babies killed and eaten ????

The least any animal deserves is for its owner to know what they are doing and the very least they deserve is to be handled as they should be.

I am speechless when I hear what the public are told about these little animals, how some BREEDERS??? Cannot even sex their animals, how some give this major long diet sheet that is NOT at all necessary OVER THE TOP ridiculous and then you hear they were sold their hedgie from this same breeder as a female when in fact it is a male, how they have owned it since 6 weeks of age and how to this day it is WILD cannot get near it.

Purchased another hedgie a totally different story, so friendly, just a complete turnaround from what they experienced first time around. SURE MAKES YOU THINK.

These are solitary animals meaning, they live on their own, if you want two keep them in separate housing.

If you want to breed ensure your female is of breeding age and weighing a minimum of 300gms if she never gets to that weight DON’T BREED her it risks her life. I have had the experience of buying two hedgie girls over the years that never got anywhere near breeding size or weight.????????????? They have never been bred and never will be bred.

Don’t overbreed your female. They will breed from an early age - both sexes and it is up to the owner to be responsible and caring and well informed. Don’t put your pet’s welfare, its health, its life at risk because of your bank balance.

IF you do decide to breed it is your responsibility to ensure the offspring are placed in homes with knowledgeable owners, not just a case of notching up another sale.

Breeding should be undertaken by informed persons and the breeding should be controlled.

Hedgies repeatedly mated never preggy, there has to be a problem.

Anyone needing info on breeding, feeding, housing etc, is more than welcome to contact me.

Persons buying hedgies from us don’t have issues with them.  We don’t sell very young animals; we ensure our buyers are fully equipped with the HOW to do this and that and the WHAT NOT TO DO….

If you have a hedgie that is unwell take it to a vet that specialises in EXOTIC pets, don’t try and do it yourself. Or listen to other people.

I would be useless at offering advice on ILL or unhealthy hedgies as I have never owned the first one.  We stick to the rules, we keep them as they should be kept, we feed them as they should be fed, we breed them as they should be bred.  We sell healthy, happy hedgies and we don’t sell them as soon as we possibly can so we will know if they do not pick up weight as they should.  Glad to say never had one that has never reached it’s full potential, size wise.

We are happy to assist with all your hedgie questions needing answering BUT if you have health issues see an exotic Vet – a vet specialising in the treating of exotic pets.   We have NO experience in that department.

Please note : We do not sell our hoglets at 5 or 6 weeks of age or when they are a certain weight.

We sell them at an older age which ensures, they are perfectly stable,

mature enough to handle a home change which reslults in us never having had the first issue with babies leaving our home.

OUR babies  dont leave the Mother and their siblings the day they leave us, to face life ahead on their own,

All kept separately for a good while prior to leaving our home - resulting in them being adjusted to life on their own.

EVERYONE buying a hedgie from us will be advised before purchase of all the ins and outs, what to do

what NOT to do, if this is in fact the pet you think it is, if it is suited to you and your family

ALL THE INS AND OUTS -  NO GREY AREAS

with us it is far more important to get the right home than just make another sale.

We want our hedgie kids in forever homes, where they live to a ripe old age.

Sad to say,  way too many get resold/rehomed in a very short period of time as the purchaser was never

advised of the INS OR OUTS or simply never researched these cute little spikeys

before rushing out and buying one

Ideal pets - super pets - in the right hands, with the right owner/s.

A GOOD TIP TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT BEFORE AND AFTER HANDLING YOUR HEDGIE

WASH YOUR HANDS, THEY HAVE A FANTASTIC SENSE OF SMELL....

BEFORE  HANDLING so they do not pick up strange scents, that may be on your hands.

AFTER HANDLING  to ensure your own  hygiene

Hedgies…  as they are fondly called.

The African PYGMY Hedgehog.  Curious by nature,  they have an acute sense of smell but rather poor eye sight, so be cautious when you let your little hedgie out for some sight –seeing, as he does not see too well.

They enjoy swimming under supervision, however. If you do let them swim in your pool rinse off with warm water. Watch them all the time, to ensure they do not hit a problem. DON’T DO THIS VERY OFTEN AND ENSURE IT IS VERY GOOD SUNNY WEATHER.  The safer and easier option is to let them swim in the bath or basin. THEY SIMPLY LOVE IT..

HOW easy or difficult are they to own, how much work is involved. Etc?

Well ours are kept on ATRO TURF(fake grass) with a litter box, to which NORMAL kitty litter has been added, not the crystal type – old fashioned type) yes you can toilet train your hedgie, which to my mind makes life far easier than POOP scooping every day all over the cage, you can just scoop out the poor in the box and change once a week.

Hygiene is your key to keeping your hedgie healthy.

Some may enjoy a hideout box, others don’t, I give them the option of both but very often find them fast asleep under their blanket on the astro turf. A few folk keep them on sawdust and that is very dusty and very hard to keep clean and keep tidy.  The way we keep ours, always neat and tidy.

Play time.  You can give them a box containing toys commonly known as a DIG BOX,  add marbles, small plastic balls, bits of cloth HOWEVER caution with that, stray bits of thread can harm little feet, so no bits of cloth with loose thread.

A wheel is an excellent form of exercise, but here again be cautious, the wheels that are open and made of metal cannot be used by young hedgies, it is too dangerous, the basin type can be used by hedgies of all ages, babies as well as they can sit in them, in time, they will begin to spin the wheel and in no time at all have mastered the fun of spinning the wheel. They can spin for hours and hours, huge fun for them.  Hopefully your wheel is the silent type or you may hear them all night long, spinning away.

The basin type wheel, exceptionally easy to clean as well, a bit of dish liquid hot water a good wipe, dry and ready to use again.  100% safe for the young  baby hedgie.

How big does a hedgie grow.  Well I have to say it is in the genes, just as us humans are of varying heights the hedgie is of varying weights, some are basically around 300gms in weight other 750 odd grams.

Can you keep two together? YOU CAN of the same sex and possibly same litter siblings BUT what we have found over time, one ends up considerably bigger than the other from keeping the food to itself or over eating, whichever of the two it is, so best thing to do is house, individually. Safest method of keeping them if you keep two of the same sex together, before they reach maturity which is a year of age, separate them or they will begin to fight.

If you do keep two together of the same sex from youngsters, keep an eye out for any fighting, if it happens separate them immediately.

What type of house can be used, some use plastic base wire framed rabbit cages and nothing wrong with that.  However be cautious of draughts, and in winter the room temperature will have to be monitored or they may end up pretty chilly.

We use wooden housing with wire fronts to the cages, they are vacuumed out and you may think hedgies will freak, well not at all, Hedgie is more than happy with the vacuum cleaner.  Remember if you raise your hedgie in a family environment, tv, kiddies playing the hedgie will become accustomed to the normal noise in a home, keep your hedgie locked away in its own room, in the quiet you are going to end up with a rather scared little spikey that is very aware of sudden noises etc. Will jump a mile at a sudden noise. Roll up in a ball and not ideal,  if they interact with the family, are part of the family they will relax and nothing nicer than having an over the top friendly little spikey in the family.

How many is enough?  we find we sell one to someone, then another and then another, possibly because they are infectious, one is often never enough.  The colours are very appealing and the more colours and variations on facial markings you see, the more you are inclined to buy yet another new baby to join the family. However remember all of them need their own special ME TIME with their owners, don’t keep them locked away on their own, they can be extremely social and enjoy interacting with their owners and families.

The best place to be with your hedgie is on the floor, encourage children to be on the floor with them.

They are not like a cat or dog that when you call HEDGIE rocks up – NOT at all but they do recognise your voice and your own special smell. So they know who is their owner, who they don’t know, a visitor a friend, or a family member.

A hedgie if cared for well will give you a good few years of total pleasure. They are believed to only reach five years of age but in captivity that can end up a fair bit more.

How do you ensure you will get the best out of your hedgie.? BUY from a reputable source.  We do not interbreed, we have numerous blood lines, we keep records of the background to every hedgie we own, the colouring of the parents, the grandparents and sometime even the great grandparents.

Feeding is of course important, feed a quality food kitten/cat food with no fish or milk content in their kibble. Dry kibble, fresh water in a bottle hung on the cage front. Change water regularly, one a week give your hedgies house a good spring clean, keep your hedgie in hygienic conditions and you will have many good years ahead with your pet.

Wash the astro turf weekly and leave outside to dry in the sunshine.  Very quick time to dry but don’t put it back in the house till it is totally dry. Clean new blankets, wash the dig box contents.

You can bath your hedgie too but we will leave that for an article in the near future.

NEXT TIME, we discuss diet and what you can feed as a treat and what you should not feed to your  hedgie,  keep watching.

We are very happy to assist with any questions, etc, however follow the rules, buy quality healthy hedgies, you won’t need to much help at all….

Please ensure you are knowledgeable and done your research on owning these little spikeys before rushing out and buying one..

Do not impulse buy any pet and a hedgie is no different.

So many of these delightful little animals are rehomed in their first year of their life, as the owners did not do their homework.

We breed healthy,  quality hedgehogs.

We have HOGLETS available from time to time,   most of the colours periodically available, as well as the split faces, reverse face, odd ear,

pinto’s in low, medium and high white, as well as the full reverse pinto, snip nose etc.

We offer a free advice at all times. TO PERSONS INTERESTED IN OWNING THE AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG

Veterinary care – Before purchasing a HEDGIE find out should you have the need to seek veterinary assistance, who would be your nearest vet that would deal with exotic pets.  NOT all Vets will have the expertise to handle and treat an exotic.

There are a few rules I apply no matter what pet I am looking to purchase:

1) Buy from a reputable source

2) Feed the best food you can afford, the recommended diet.

3) Keep your hedgie’s home in a hygienic condition at all times.

4) See to it your hedgie is treated, handled, cared for as it should be.

FOLLOW these simple guidelines and chances are pretty good you will never require the services of a vet.

HISTORY
African pygmy hedgehogs have become the latest exotic pet craze with hundreds of people falling in love with the tiny spiked creatures. As well as being incredibly cute and friendly, they are extremely easy to care for. The African pygmy hedgehog was first bred in captivity in the United States and is a cross between an Algerian and a White Bellied hedgehog. Before purchasing one as a pet, it is important to check whether or not it is legal in your area to keep a heghegog.

HEDGIES HOME

Hedgehogs are solitary creatures that only seek company when they wish to mate. Therefore, it is advisable to keep only one hedgehog in a cage to avoid fights. You should invest in a cage of at least a meter in length, remember ensure your hedgie is not in a draught, as they could catch cold.   Your new pet will need a small litter box filled with shredded paper to use as a bathroom, OR normal non clumpng cat litter is ideal.  A small box or soft pouch to sleep in and an exercise wheel.  Exercise for your hedgie is one of the most important things you need to ensure your hedgie, can exercise when it wants to, this keeps it fit, healthy and above all else gives it something to do.  Remember at night hegies in the wild would  run for miles.   You can use a wooden box, with a lining of sorts to keep them warm as well, We put our boxes partly over the heating pad that if they go into the box, they have the option of being warm or cooler.  Sawdust is something most hedgie owners use in the home itself, however we use astroturf.  It is far cleaner, no mess with shavings all over the show, and if your hedgie uses a sandbox, as a toilet, all that is  needed is to poop scoop and you have a continual clean cage. REMEMBER when chosing your hedgies living quarters, they do not hibernate in SA and should have a small area in their cage heated in the cold months, optional for them to use or not.  Reptile heating pads can be used ensure however they are covered that the hedgie does not overheat.  Wooden accomodation is ideal but no glass front.  It should be welded mesh on the front of the cage as ventilation is important to the health of a hedgie.. A lid that lifts that makes cleaning your hedgie house easy.

Hedgies love to hide in soft blankets, so offer a fleece type blanket and you will see often your hedgie is curled up fast asleep under the blanket, we put ours partly on the warming pad and the rest of the blanket is off the warming pad so hedgies has the option of being like toast or cooler. ALWAYS check the heat your warming pad gives off and ensure no wires are easily found by an enquisitive hedgie.  We stick the heating pad to the floor of the cage, a tiny hole is drilled at the bottom corner and the wires are out of the wooden home and hedgie is safe.

HANDLING YOUR HEDGIE

African pygmy hedgehogs love being handled and will slowly learn to trust you once they feel safe in their environment. Try to purchase a baby hedgehog from a reputable breeder rather than a pet shop. Start by picking up your hedgehog by placing your fingers under his belly from either side and letting him relax on your lap. After a while, he will slowly start to uncurl and enjoy being handled. Hedgehogs also love to take baths, and this is a great opportunity to bond with your new pet.  A Hedgie can never be likened to a cat or dog but in their own cute way they are endearing to their owners.

Upon encountering a new smell, hedgehogs will start to foam at the mouth and then spread their saliva over their backs. Although it can look as though the hedgehog is in distress, this is perfectly normal behaviour and is known as self-anointing. As long as you are prepared to cater to their slightly fussy diets and spend time socialising them, hedgehogs make wonderful pets that will keep you entertained for hours at a time.

Wash your hands before and after handling your hedgie. Avoid using very strong smelling perfumes as hedgie has a very good sense of smell.  Your hedgie will start to recognise your sent and know you are its owner.  Children with hedgies, should sit on the floor and play with them, in this way no one can get hurt.

TOYS,

To avoid boredom with your hedgie, give it toys. Some folk make use of a dig box, we will bring you info on that shortly. You can add marbles to the cage, soft balls, pingpong balls, kitty toy balls. Toilet roll cardboard, ut up the middle and open slightly so hedgie does not get stuck in it.  Small soft toys, remember the hedgie has a great sense of smell buts its eyesight is not that brilliant.  Avoid areas where it can climb heights in case of it falling off.

PLAYTIME

You should make playtime nightly for your hedgie, you could allow it to run around a floor in your home make use of a playpen as long as it cannot climb the panels so best keep an eye.

HYGIENE IN THE HEDGIE HOME

We use woman housing with wire fronts,  we use a vaccuum cleaner to ensure everything is removed from all corners, crevices in their house.  We wipe down what needs to be wiped down and the astroturf is washed and hung out to dry in the sun once a week.  HYGIENE is important for a healthy, happy hedgie.  New kitty litter provided.

FOOD FOR YOUR HEDGIE

IT is important to buy a good quality dry kibble small sized for kitten and cat - kitten when your hedgie is growing up and keep a fresh bowl available in the cage. Fresh water at all times is a must. If you use a small open bowl, ensure you clean that bowl and replace the water every day.  You can use the bottles that hang on the outside of the cage, but replace that water regularaly, do not wait till it is finished, imagine ddrinking the same water, day after day.?  A hedgie does not ask much of its owner, but good food, good accomodation and regular handling is a must.

TREATS FOR YOUR HEGIE

The main diet for a hedgie is the cat/kitten kibble, hedgehog food can be purchased in SA at a very high price so most people use cat kibble which is perfect for your hedgie.  You can add scrambled egg in a separate little dish on the odd occassion made with water not milk.  ONce eaten remove the dish.  Cooked unseasoned chicken in tiny pieces is ideal as a treat and feed as a treat once in a while not as a daily diet.

Mealworms will be enjoyed as well but can make your pet gain weight fast.  Be cautious.

EXERCISE WHEELS

Exercise is a must for your pet to remain healthy throughout its life. Invest in a wheel, ensure they are not the rat type as that can injure little paws. We have wheels available, silent, easy to clean, no open areas that hedgie can injure itself, Plastic, beautiful colours, affordable,

FOR THE L heartVE OF THE AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOG

research on the internet if this type of exotic pet is suited to you and your lifestyle.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.
